Ashes to ashes
For my final-year project at Michaelis School of Fine Art I created a large map. I had the contours laser-etched into 15 separate wooden pieces that fitted together, and made a box to contain the stacked pieces.
The map is based on a paper original from the 1960s that shows the Chimanimani mountains in Zimbabwe, the area where my father’s family grew up. I scanned the map and traced all the contours by hand in Adobe Illustrator. The process became a significant conceptual part of the project.
